Get Carter (released in 2000) - Starring Sylvester Stallone, Miranda Richardson, Rachael Leigh Cook, Alan Cumming, Mickey Rourke, Michael Caine

Get Carter is a 2000 film directed by Stephen Kay; it is a remake of the 1971 film by the same name, starring Michael Caine. Both films drew inspiration from the book Jack’s Return Home by the British author Ted Lewis. Michael Caine is a part of this film as well. The 2000 version stars Sylvester Stallone in the main lead as a mob enforcer named Jack Carter who returns to his hometown when he gets the sad news of his brother’s death in an accident. At the funeral he can feel that his presence is not welcome, as Gloria and Doreen Carter - his sister in law and niece, tell him in no uncertain terms that Ritchie would’ve appreciated his being around when he was alive, to them Jack is just ‘a picture on the piano’. He also bumps into a stranger, a lady who does not disclose her identity to him.
His years in the mob have given him ample of experience and he has a hunch that Ritchie’s ‘accident’ was anything but. Doreen confides to Jack that although the authorities claim that her father died in an accident caused by his drinking - she says he never drank, at least he wouldn’t get dead drunk and drive around town in a storm! On the other hand, Jack’s boss Les Fletcher (the voice of Tom Sizemore) wants him back in Vegas; he is upset that Carter is missing from ‘work’. Con McCarty (John C. McGinley) tells Carter that things are getting difficult as the news of Jack’s affair with the boss’s wife Audrey (Gretchen Mol) are making the social circuit.
In a bid to get to the mystery surrounding Richard’s death, Jack stops by Cliff Brumby’s (Michael Caine) office. Cliff is a loan shark and owner of the club where Ritchie worked for five years as manager until his untimely death. Cliff asks Jack if he knew about Ritchie and Geraldine’s affair – she is the woman from the funeral. Carter tails her to her workplace, where she is with Cyrus Paice (Mickey Rourke) - who is an acquaintance from the past. Carter is suspicious of Paice, for whom Geraldine works.

As he tails Paice, he is led to Jeremy Kinnear (Alan Cumming), a well established business man who owns a computer company, which is worth ‘gazillions’. Jeremy leads a dual existence, playing to the gallery of stockholders with his pin stripes, and having some risqué fun in his free time - thanks to Cyrus Paice and his escort service. After his interaction with Jack, Jeremy is freaking out with someone over the phone, telling the person he wants nothing to do with the big brother and wants him gone.
As Jack delves deeper into the case, he finds out that Cyrus is infact running well oiled machinery that breeds pornography - his niece Doreen is one of the girls implicated and sexually abused by Paice, even Geraldine is roped in to track girls, who are later drugged and raped, and filmed. Given that Richard and Geraldine were lovers, out of loyalty and friendship, she hands over the disc with the proof of what has been happening - it was when Ritchie decided to go to the police that he was killed.
Now Carter sets out to take revenge for his brother's death, and there are a few killings that happen as a result. Although the film received no critical appreciation and did not make too much money either, yet it was welcomed by audiences who lapped up Stallone’s sharply dressed, mafia image. The soundtrack and visuals added to the thrill of the viewing experience and feel of the film.

Action thriller - Gone in 60 seconds (released in 2000) (starring Nicholas Cage, Angelina Jolie and Robert Duvall)

"I didn't do it for the money. I did it for the cars." (Memphis)

Gone in 60 Seconds is somewhat loosely based on the 1974 film by the same name; the current movie was directed by Dominic Sena (Swordfish), was released in 2000, and stars Nicholas Cage, Angelina Jolie and Robert Duvall, among an ensemble cast.
Randall “Memphis” Raines (Nicholas Cage, The Rock, Con Air) is an ex-car thief, who is forced to go back to his thieving ways when the Brit crime czar threatens to kill his brother Kip, when he failed to deliver a consignment of stolen vehicles on time.
How to save his brother ? The condition is to steal 50 cars in 72 hours, with his former partners-in-crime Otto (Robert Duvall, who played roles in Godfather, Speed) and Sway (Angelina Jolie, most famous in Lara Croft and Salt).
Suspicions are fanned when LAPD detectives come to learn of Raines’ return- Memphis must get the cars to the Long Beach Docks. These fifty beauties range from the Aston Martin, the Dodge Viper, Ferrari, to the Pontiac, Lamborghini and Volvo, each of them are code named after girls - Bernadine (Jaguar XJ220), Pamela (Chevy Corvette), Sharon (Pontiac GTO) etc.

All goes according to plan, until Detective Castlebeck (Delroy Lindo) throws a spanner in the works and takes out three cars - not one to be deterred, Memphis steals three cars from the police parking lot in retaliation. The Achilles’ Heel is Eleanor, the 1967 Mustang – which Raines has tried to steal on many occasions prior and failed. A Hollywood style chase takes place, which ends with Memphis jumping the car over a jam.
Unfortunately, Memphis reaches 12 minutes late - which almost cost him his life and the Eleanor is ordered to be crushed. When LAPD learns of the actual reasons for Raines return to crime, Castlebeck teams up with him to kill Calitri -who falls to his death. Kip presents Memphis with the keys to an old Mustang, which he bought in exchange for his chopper, finally happy, with his criminal past behind him, Raine and Sway drive into ‘happily-ever-after’.
Despite the impressive cast, the film received mostly poor reviews, the real star of the movie though, was Eleanor, the Mustang - with its replica named Roneale (Eleanor spelt backwards). The movie promises turbo-charged, adrenaline pumping thrills, but delivers only high decibel hype - do consider watching it just for Jolie’s pout, since Cage’s mumbling tone and the alternating screeching of brakes makes for little that could be termed entertaining.
The plot seems jaded, and the rush one awaits at the prospect of fifty machines displaying such brazen horsepower-never really happens. Great cast, fifty awesome cars, and 118 minutes later - the movie is still lame and boring. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced Days of Thunder, The Rock, Con Air etc, really lost the plot this time. Love your cars, maybe make a really nice movie with cars that tell the story , but do refrain from glorifying car theft, no matter how pressing the reasons are!

What lies beneath (released in 2000) - A supernatural thriller starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford - a big hit

This movie starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford was one of the biggest hits of the year. It was directed by Robert Zemeckis and was highly influenced by Hitchcockian movies.
The movie starts with the troubles of Claire and Norman a well-to- do couple who move to Vermont. After her daughters departure for college Claire who suffers from memory lapses start feeling uneasy at their home. Unconvinced Claire conducts a séance to channel the spirit with her friend. Soon mysterious things starts happening in her house, like things falling down, the doors slamming etc. Claire finds a missing report of Madison Frank behind one of the picture frames. She visits Madison's mother and finds out that Madison was Norman's student int the university. She comes back with a lock of Madison's hair and performs a ritual to allow the spirit to possess her. A possessed Claire seduces Norman and during the act he sees the change in her appearance. A scared Norman pushes Claire which makes her loose contact with the spirit. Slowly Claire's memory returns and she remembers her husband's affair with Madison.

Norman confesses of the affair; telling Claire that he told Madison her that he loved Claire very much and could not leave her for Madison. This forced the unstable Madison to commit suicide. Norman says that he had seen her corpse with a letter written to Claire which was burnt by him. He also acknowledges of pushing the body in to the lake to make it disappear. Claire asks him to confess everything to the authorities. Norman pretends to do so and is found out.

He leans forward to give her a kiss that Claire's face morphs in to Madison's corpse like face. A scared Norman hits his head on the mirror and is rendered unconscious. Claire escapes in her car to reach the authorities. Norman follows her and forces her car in to the lake where he had pushed Madison's body.
As they struggle to get out of the lake Norman Grabs Claire's legs to prevent her from escaping. But Madison's ghost appear to drag Norman down allowing Claire to surface. She escapes and Norman is drowned to pay for his sins. Claire pays her respects at Madison's grave and leaves for a new life.
This movie is so highly influenced by Hitchcock's dramatization that the critics have drawn several parallels to Hitchcock's various movies. This film was the first film for Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer as a pair. Harrison Ford has gone on record saying that Michelle Pfeiffer's presence was the motivating factor for his signing the film. The movie went on to become the block buster of 2000. A good spooky horror movie for all.
